UK Energy Saving Promotes an Ethical Christmas Dinner

Think organic and Fairtrade at Christmas

November 22, 2008 /Grocery PR News/ -- Christmas is a time for eating, drinking and being merry, and the team at www.uk-energy-saving.com have been thinking about how to make festive fare as ethical as possible. This does not mean compromising on quality but rather that the all important Christmas dinner can have a wide-reaching positive impact both environmentally and ethically.

In terms of the environment, meat production is much more carbon intensive than producing vegetables, so the most eco-friendly option would be to have a vegetarian Christmas meal. If this doesn't appeal from either a taste or tradition point of view, then it is important to make sure that any meat you buy is organic and locally reared. The same, of course, goes for the rest of the meal, and a wide selection of organic snacks such as chocolates and nuts are also widely available either in supermarkets, local stores or online. Whist some products may be a little more expensive than non-organic alternatives, many will be competitively priced, with organic vegetable box schemes in particular often offering great value for money.

As well as seeking out organic products, it is also worth looking for the Fairtrade mark on those items which cannot be sourced locally or from within the UK. This ensures that the producers are getting a fair deal, keeping Christmas dinner ethical as well as environmentally friendly. Not only is there a wide range of Fairtrade food products available, but also Fairtrade and organic alcohol and other beverages to accompany Christmas dinner and other festivities.

The UK Energy Saving product review section's new organic and Fairtrade food and drink categories contain a number of products perfect for Christmas.
